Most falls happen at home—and many can be prevented with a few simple changes. Use this quick room‑by‑room checklist to make your loved one’s home safer.
1. Floors & Walkways
Remove loose rugs or secure them with non‑slip backing.
Pick up cords, clutter, and small objects from the floor.
Make sure pathways are clear and wide enough for a walker or cane.
2. Stairs & Hallways
Add sturdy handrails on both sides of stairs if possible.
Fix loose steps or torn carpet.
Ensure stairways and halls have bright lighting and working bulbs.
3. Bathroom Safety
Install grab bars near the toilet, tub, and shower.
Use a non‑slip mat in the tub or shower.
Consider a raised toilet seat or shower chair.
4. Bedroom Safety
Keep a lamp or nightlight within easy reach of the bed.
Make sure the path from bed to bathroom is clear and well lit.
Check that the bed height is safe for sitting and standing.
5. Kitchen Safety
Store everyday items at waist or shoulder height—no need for step stools.
Wipe up spills right away.
Keep a sturdy chair nearby if your loved one tires easily while cooking.
A quick home safety check can greatly lower the risk of falls and injuries.
